Two pupils were injured on Wednesday, when plasters collapsed and fell on their heads. The incident took place in the 1st Elementary School of Porto Rafti, a seaside resort town in eastern Attica, some 30 km away from Athens.
The pupils were reportedly injured in their face and backs, and the school parents’ association has been waiting for the medical report.
The Association of Teachers of Eastern Attica issued a statement about the incident denouncing at the same time, the “state indifference and under-funding” that leave schools “in ruins” and it highlights once again the safety and maintenance problems in school infrastructure.
The Association noted that the incident occurred just a few days after an inspection by the Earthquake Protection Organization (OASP), on October 27, “where there were assurances that everything was fine”.
“The ceilings are falling in our schools due to state indifference and under-funding”, the association emphasized demanding immediate technical inspection and safety certification in all school classrooms.
At the same time, it described as “dangerous and criminal” the state of school buildings, accusing the state of “playing with the lives of children and teachers.”
They further denounced that in some classrooms there were problems with humidity since the last school year, but these problems were not fixed.
