Athens Municipality celebrates the “Night of Wishes” with 3,000 laterns

3,000 biodegradable lanterns were released to the sky in downtown Athens on the “Night of Wishes” on December 26, 2025.

The action organized by the Athens Municipality created a fairy-tale setting in and over the decorated Kotzia Square.

The paper biodegradable lanterns lit up the sky, conveying the wishes of thousands of citizens, who responded to the call of the Mayor of Athens, Haris Doukas, and experienced a magical night.

The Mayor of Athens, Haris Doukas, declared: “Tonight we filled Athens with light and love. Three thousand biodegradable lanterns – more than ever – traveled to the sky and with them our hopes, dreams and expectations. In this magical moment, the city reminds us that its strength lies in its people, in solidarity, in coexistence and in faith in a better tomorrow. “I hope that the light, which we let travel high tonight, will return to every neighborhood as optimism, humanity and a smile.”
