An unprecedented case of human brutality against defenseless animals: 17 puppies were found dead under a bridge in the Municipality of Amari in Rethymno on the island of Crete.
The dead puppies were found by a volunteer of a local animal welfare society last Saturday, January 3, 2026.
“This is not an isolated incident, but a mass killing of defenseless animals,” said the animal welfare association “Volunteer Group I Care” adding that the puppies were found in the area between the villages of Meronas and Gerakari in Rethymno.
It seems that this is not an isolated incident, but a mass killing of defenseless animals, which constitutes a criminal offense under current legislation, the animal welfare association emphasizes.
The association also stated that an official complaint has been filed with the Greek Police, with the “Volunteer Group I Care” demanding a full investigation of the case and accountability for those responsible.
The Amari Police Department, which was contacted immediately, had already been informed in the previous days. We are not talking about an “isolated incident”. We are talking about the mass killing of defenseless animals. We are talking about a criminal offense.
An official complaint has been filed with the Greek Police. “We demand a full investigation and accountability. Silence and indifference are not an option. Anyone who can do this to animals can do it again,” the animal welfare association said on a post on Facebook.
It is not known how the puppies died.
FB users commented under the post and wondered about the cause of death, urging the association to look around for hunters in the area who have female dogs because the puppies look like hunting dogs race.
