Protesting farmers and breeders in several parts of mainland Greece gradually ease the road blockades on Friday ahead of the meeting with the prime minister in Athens on upcoming Tuesday, January 13, 2026.
The government has said it would only meet with them only with the roads open.
Several blocs of protesters have openrf highways and roads, however, they did not withdraw their tractors and it is up to police to decide whether traffic of vehicles and trucks is safe with the tractors parked at the roadside.
“There is no question of ending the protest,” farmers said especially as the 48-hour roadblocks theoretically end on Saturday morning.
They noted that the tractors will remain on the highways and the situation will be reassessed after the meeting with the prime minister, so that their final decisions can be made after evaluating the results of the meeting.
Other blocs have withdrawn their tractors and moved to other towns and cities thus remaining stand-by, while some blocks continue the blockades until tomorrow morning.
At the same time, the blocs participating in the Panhellenic Coordinating Committee are planning a new meeting in Nikaia, central Greece, in order to determine both the composition of the delegation and the framework for the discussion with the prime minister.
Protesters said that in the delegations will not be only farmers and breeders but also beekeepers, fishermen and representatives from other sectors of the country’s primary production as they seek sustainability and not just temporary measures..
In the long list of their demands that include subsidies, tax relievs , they have added the Mercosur agricultural trade agreement between the European Union and countries of South America. They request from the prime minister to follow the path of French President Emmanuel Macron, who announced on Thursday night that “France will not sign the Mercosur.”
Protesters of the primary sector are not fully convinced about a positive outcome of their meeting with the prime minister as the government has made clear that “there is no fiscal room for more support measures for the farmers.”
