Greece Weather Warning: Ice cold wave, stormy winds, snowfalls

Greece’s National Meteorological Service EMY issued a weather warning about a gradual deterioration with an intense cold wave, strong northerly winds and snowfall in the mountainous – semi-mountainous but also in the lowland areas of northern Greece.

The cold front is forecast to set in from the afternoon on Sunday, January 11, 2026.

Temperatures will remain very low until the morning of Wednesday, January 14.

Frost, locally strong in the north, will occur mainly in the morning and evening hours.

Very strong to stormy northerly winds will blow with intensity of 7 to 8 Beaufort and locally up to 9 B until the evening hours of Monday, January 12.

EMY’s Weather warning, snowfalls

Snowfalls will occur:
a. In the mountainous – semi-mountainous areas of the mainland and the island of Evia.
b. From the night in lowland areas of the region of Eastern Macedonia Thrace, in the regional units of Serres and Halkidiki, the eastern parts of the regional unit of Thessaloniki as well as on the islands of the northern Aegean (Lemnos, Lesvos, Chios, Sporades).
c. From early Monday morning in lowland areas of Evia (mainly in its eastern parts) and the mountainous – semi-mountainous areas of the Cyclades and Crete.

Snowfall will stop before noon on Monday, Jan 12, in the north and from the afternoon hours in the remaining areas except the mountainous – semi-mountainous areas of Crete where they will continue until Tuesday morning, Jan 13.

Meteorologists have also predicted snowfalls in Attica and the northern suburbs of Athens.

Meanwhile, strong snowfalls have already occurred in Epirus and Aitoloakarnania, western Greece as well as in western Macedonia. Schools will remain closed in the region of Florina on Monday.
