Sahara dust and mud rains affect Greece

High concentration of Sahara dust and mud rains due to stormy southern winds are forecast for Greece on February 5 and 6, 2026, with health experts to warn citizens

According to the AtmoHub, the convergence of winds, due to the combination of a high barometric system in the southeastern Mediterranean and a low barometric system in the western Mediterranean, favors the transport of dust from areas of the Sahara, Morocco and Libya, to Greece.

The phenomenon started already on Wednesday, February 4, initially in the western parts of the country and gradually in the east, while increased dust concentrations in the atmosphere are forecast for today, Thursday, February 5, 2026.

The intensified phenomenon affects more southern Greece, mainly the Peloponnese and Crete, while capital Athens has also been covered with a dust “dome” since Thursday noon.

In addition, according to AtmoHub, the rainfall that will accompany the African dust phenomenon is expected to partially decongest the atmosphere, leading to dust deposition on the ground.
