In the end, Greece responded positive to the invitation of US President Donald Trump and will take part in the “Board of Peace” meeting in Washington DC along with Cyprus and Italy.
The three EU member states will participate as observers.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis responded to the invitation and sent the message to the White House that Greece will be present at the Peace Council meeting on February 19, the PM’s office made known late on Sunday.
In a apparent non-paper sent to media, it is noted “we note that PM Mitsotakis was the first European leader to speak about the need to participate with an exclusive topic of discussion on Gaza, as provided for in the relevant United Nations Security Council resolution.
Thus, Greece, together with Cyprus and Italy, will form the strong European pole in the Peace Council. The decision of the three countries to take part as observers satisfied the American side.”
Athens will be represented at the Board of Peace by Deputy Foreign Minister Haris Theocharis.
Last week, government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis said that the Prime Minister was not planning to attend the meeting in Washington due other planned schedules and official visits abroad.
