Greek PM not planning to join Trump’s “Board of Peace”

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will not be joining US President Donald Trump’s “Board of Peace” which is due to hold its first session on February 19 in Washington, DC.

“It is not on the prime minister’s schedule,” government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis told a press briefing on Thursday.

PM Mitsotakis has reportedly a scheduled visit to India around this time.

The BoP’ was initially presented as involving a small group of leaders who would specifically oversee the ceasefire in Gaza. The US president subsequently invited dozens of countries to participate, among them also Greece and Cyprus.

However, both countries appear to follow the EU policy on this matter as the Trump’s “Board of Peace” apparently aims to replace the United Nations and function as a broader conflict resolution body.

Citing government sources, cnngreece reported on Thursday morning, that during that around February 19, the Prime Minister has commitments, such as his trip to Abu Dhabi on February 17, while the following two days he will travel to New Delhi.

It is worth noting that according to the same information, “our European partners, with whom”, as government sources note, “we always coordinate”, are not expected to participate in the Peace Council.

It should be recalled, that Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis had made clear on January 22 that “Greece will follow the lead of the EU” on this matter.
