USS Gerald R. Ford docks at Souda Bay on its way to the Middle East

The USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier arrived at the Souda Bay and docked at the port on the island of Crete early afternoon on Clean Monday.

The largest and one of the most advanced warships of its class in the world, arrived in Souda at noon on February 23, to refuel before being deployed to the Middle East, against the backdrop of tensions between the US and Iran.

Souda is one of the most important bases in the Mediterranean, due to its ability to provide support even to a warship like the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford, highlighting its strategic and geopolitical value in the wider region.

It is not clear for how long the Gerald r. Ford will be docked at the Souda port which may face one big ecological and sanitation problem: the majority of the toilets on the US aircraft carrier have been broken and flooded with sewage.

Just think that the Gerald R. Ford carries 5,000 personnel…
