Thousands of people across Greece gathered on Saturday, February 28, on the third anniversary of the train tragedy in Tempi to demand Justice for the 57 victims.
Over 100 demonstration are taking place across Greece and over 25 in cities abroad.

More than estimated 45,000 people flocked to Syntagma Square opposite the Greek Parliament in Athens holding banners and placard and chanting slogans “Justice for the victims” and “No Cover-up!”.




The protests have been organized by victims’ families, students’ and workers’ organization and unions, and have the supported by some opposition parties.
Parents of victims addressed the crowd saying: “We only ask for one thing. Justice.”

Three years and 57 victims, the majority of them young people returning home or to their schools after a long weekend. Many were burnt alive. The youngest victim was 15 years old.

Back in Athens, police has arrested so far 11 people, some of them minors, and detained another 178, state-broadcaster ERT reported around 4 p.m. the majority of arrests and detentions took place before the protest started, in “preventive” operations of police in the city center.
One of the arrested was carrying bottles with benzine that could be used as “molotov cocktail bombs” and another one for having an air pistol.

Five people were arrested also in Thessaloniki, where the Greek Police announced that they were carrying flares with them.
More than 15,000 protesters in Thessaloniki.
Thodoris Elefteriadis, who lost his mother at the Tempi tragedy, denounced that he was stopped by police while he was heading to join the protest at Syntagma Square.
He said that police recognized who he wa, they addressed him with his name and yet they wanted to make body control.

The protest started at 12 o’ clock noon and was peacefully continuing when around 2:30 a group of the “usual suspects” that is people wearing hoodies and full face masks, started to clash with police, thus ending the protest.

There were clashes between protesters and police also in Thessaloniki and Heraklio, Crete.
The trial is set to finally start towards the end of March, but no politician is charged with any wrongdoing.
