Golden Dawn: Appeals court rules all 42 defendants of neo-Nazi party guilty

The Five-Member Court of Felony Appeals on Wednesday found all 42 defendants, members of the neo-nazi party with presence in the Greek Parliament, Golden Dawn, guilty.

The second instance court unanimously upheld the ruling of the first-instance court in 2020 that Golden Dawn operated as a criminal organization under the cover of a political party.

The court upheld convictions in connection with the murder of anti-fascist rapper Pavlos Fyssas in Keratsini suburb of Piraeus in September  2013, as well as the violent attack on Egyptian fishermen in Perama, near Piraeus, in 2012.

Although the Golden Dawn was active in violently attacks of migrants, it was actually the murder of Pavlos Fyssas that forced the government of New Democracy under Antonis Samaras to launch a sweeping crackdown on the neo-Nazi organization.
As announced by the presiding judge, those convicted of directing the criminal organization are GA leadership, former MPs and one MEP: Nikolaos Michaloliakos, GA founder and chief, Ilias Kasidiaris, GA deputy chief, Ioannis Lagos, Christos Pappas, Ilias Panagiotaros, Georgios Germenis and Artemis Mattheopoulos.

The remaining 11 former MPs were found guilty of membership in a criminal organization are Antonis Gregos, Eleni Zaroulia, Polyvios Zisimopoulos, Panagiotis Iliopoulos, Nikolaos Kouzilos, Dimitris Koukoutsis, Nikolaos Michos, Konstantinos Barbarousis, Stathis Boukouras, Chrysovalantis Alexopoulos and Michalis Arvanitis.

Among the remaining defendants convicted of membership in a criminal organization are the murderer of Pavlos Fyssas, Georgios Roupakias, as well as the Perama local branch leader Anastasios Pantazis and the Nikaia local branch leader Georgios Patelis.

Regarding the murder of Pavlos Fyssas, in addition to the perpetrator Georgios Roupakias, 14 other defendants were found guilty as accomplices to homicide.

Concerning the attack against Egyptian fishermen in Perama, all five defendants were convicted of attempted homicide.

Golden Dawn entered the Parliament in practically with 21 MPs in May 2012 and effectively with 18 MPs in June 2012 amid the economic crisis in Greece.
