Earthquake strikes with 4.8 R Karditsa in central Greece

An earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale struck the mountainous area between Karditsa, Arta and Evrytaniain western Thessaly, central Greece, at 12:14 at noon on Thursday, March 12, 2026.

According to the revised solution of the Geo-dynamic Institute, the epicenter of the earthquake was 11 kilometers southeast of Anthiros, Karditsa and 87 kilometers southwest of Larissa, while the focal depth is estimated at 13.7 kilometers.

There are no reports of injuries but local media report of material damages and rock falls creating problems on the road network.

Power outages have been recorded in some village of the eastern Argithea.

The Deputy Mayor of Argithea, Nikos Sakkas, stressed to local media karditsalive.net that for now there is no information about damages in buildings, but this is something we will see in the future, as many houses are not inhabited at this time.

The Municipality, he continued, is in contact with those who live in the villages and with those who own a house in order to be aware of the condition of the properties, while crews are also conducting inspections in the Local Communities around Leontitos and in the wider area.

Latest information, though, report of some damages in a monastery and some old houses.

The Mayor of Agrafa, Alexandros Kardambikis, stated that there were no injuries, but only material damage, calling on residents to move away from dangerous buildings and to contact communities chairmen to report any damage.

Lekkas: “No major earthquakes in the epicenter area”

The president of the Earthquake Planning and Protection Organization (OASP), Efthymios Lekkas, appeared reassuring saying “we don’t have major earthquakes in the epicenter area.”

He added that the earthquake was felt from Lefkada in the Ionian Sea in the West to Volos in Magnesia in the East.
