Rock slides on iconic Santorini disturb traffic of vehicles and ships

A major problem arose on Thursday on the iconic island of Santorini due to rock slides that have closed the road leading to the port of Athinio.

Queues have formed on the road network of Santorini from vehicles that attempted to descend to Athinio, while ships arrivals and departures have been halted.

The latest bad weather on the island caused serious rock slides at key points, resulting in the temporary closure of many roads, creating a huge traffic problem.

According to cyclades24, the rock slides occurred on the road leading to the port of Athinio, resulting in an immediate alert to the competent authorities. For safety reasons, the road was temporarily closed as there is a strong fear of new rockfalls in the area.

This development had a direct impact on the operation of the port, which remains essentially closed, as access has been interrupted.

Ferry Blue Star 1 managed to dock after waiting off the port for quite some time.

At the same time, a queue of cars has formed on the road to Athinio, with drivers attempting to approach the port, but without being able to pass.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, while the assessment of the damage and the risk assessment are awaited, in order to decide the next steps for the restoration of traffic.

One of the scenarios being considered is to open a section of the road to traffic -the uphill section- so that Blue Star 1 can disembark passengers and vehicles. So far, no official decision has been made.

If you plan to to travel to/from Santorini by sea, check with local port authorities, travel agents or shipping companies.
