Femicide on Crete: Missing woman found shot dead in her car

After three days of a huge search operation police found the body of 43-year-old missing Eleftheria G. on Wednesday afternoon.

The body of the victim was on the back seat of her own car and had a gunshot wound. She was reportedly covered with a carpet.

Evidence so far hints at a crime as no weapon has been found at the scene.

Police experts and forensic pathologist have reportedly arrived at the scene, in order to determine the circumstances of the woman’s her death.

The mother of three disappeared on Sunday morning, when she left home in Dafnes of Heraklion on her car taking just her mobile phone with.

When she did not return in due time, nor answered their phone calls, her children aged 21, 20 and 17 alerted the police on Sunday night.

A missing alert was issued and a big SAR operation was launched in the broader area where police officers, rescuers and volunteers searched for the missing woman with the help of specially trained dogs and drones.

The woman’s vehicle was located in a difficult to access area in an olive groove in Agia Varvara settlement on Wednesday afternoon.

According to information from local media neakriti.gr, a phone call made to the Greek Police Headquarters in Athens mobilized the authorities of Crete on Wednesday.

On Tuesday afternoon, her 40-year-old former partner was found dead in a chapel near Prophet Elias. He had taken his own life with a weapon.

He was seen in the area around 12 o’ clock at noon on Sunday and called a taxi to take him to his own car. The man had apparently a plan how to set a trap for the victim he killed right after the two met short after 11 o’ clock on Sunday morning.

During the search, police had interrogated the man who denied any recent contact to the woman. He had even staged an accident with his motorcycle to justified some abrasions on his face and arms. Police did not press any charges or detained him.

Eleftheria had broke her relationship with the man and alleged murderer a while ago due to his violent behavior and jealousy, neighbors told media.

Police continues investigation bringing together the pieces of the puzzle.

An autopsy is still due.
