Ukrainian naval mine washed up in Crete

Hobby fishermen in Neapoli region in Crete found a Ukrainian mine washed up on the rocks. They immediately informed authorities with Coast Guard officers rushing to the site.

Authorities are examining all possibilities regarding how the mine ended up at the site

A suspicious metal object found by citizens in a rocky sea zone in Agios Antonios in Crete was ultimately proven to be a naval mine.

According to information from local media ekriti.gr, the area was immediately cordoned off, while Coast Guard forces rushed to the site and the required security protocols for potentially dangerous military material were activated.

The initial assessments indicated a naval mine, with reports from the Coast Guard to the hobby fishermen who found it that it was of Ukrainian origin.

At the same time, authorities are examining all possibilities regarding how it ended up at the site, with the main issue remaining its route and origin.

The question that concerns the investigations is whether this is an old war stockpile that washed up at sea or whether it is linked to more recent movements of military equipment in the wider Eastern Mediterranean region, with corresponding reports having been recorded in other incidents, such as the one with a USV marine drone of Ukranian origin found in a cave on the island of Lefkada beginning of the month.
