IMF’s Hawley: 10″ of Painful Silence on Wages Cuts in Greek Private Sector (video)

David Hawley, press official of International Monetary Fund, gave a unique television performance when he was asked about the abolishment of 13th and 14th salary in the private sector of Greece. Hawley seemed to have swallowed his tongue as he remained silent for 10 seconds. “Journalists worried that something had happened to him” Michalis Ignatiou reports, the Ethnos newspaper correspondent, who asked the question.

Ignatiou had asked Hawley whether the IMF had changed position and now supported the repeal of the 13th and 14th salary. When Hawley recovered form the shock, he started to speak generally, giving no exact answer. Ignatiou insisted and asked him again because in the memo circulating in Greek press, the IMF appears to call for the abolishment of the 13th and 14th salaries, despite previous assurances to the contrary by the IMF.

Under pressure by Ignatiou, Hawley gave a reserved answer saying he will come back to the issue on the next press briefing.

Ignatiou reports that Hawley live briefing became an issue on American television broadcasts.

PS While I was watching Hawley on TV last night, I thought he was … ironing (the 13th and 14th salary)
