Athens: tear gas, stones, one injured as thousands protest austerity

Violent incidents broke out in downtown Athens when riot police hindered protesters to come closer to several hotels near the Greek Parliament at Syntagma Square. Protesters started to hurl stones, flares and molotov cocktails bombs against the policemen, while the latter answered with tear gas.

Greek media report that the rioters are groups of people wearing hoods.

The incidents were apparently of short duration.

One protester was beaten and fell on the ground at Benaki/Phidiou corner, near Omonia. According to media information, the man was carrying a Greek flag and was beaten by hood wearing protesters, according to eye-witnesses. Newsit  reports, the man was  mistakenly thought to be Golden Dawn supporter. He is taken to hospital.

According to latest media reports, “hoodies” have set garbage bins on fire, riot police is chasing them through the streets of Exarchia.
