Greece rejected asylum to 3 out of 8 Turkish officers who flew with helicopter after July coup

Greece has reportedly rejected asylum to three out of eight Turkish officers who landed in Alexandroupolis, Northern Greece, with a helicopter hours after the failed coup attempt on July 15th 2016.

The refusal to grant asylum does not mean they the three officers will be extradited to Turkey. They have already appealed the decision of the Asylum Committee and their application will be examined in second degree.

Furthermore, the criminal and administrative investigation conducted by the Greek Police has not concluded yet.

The rest five Turkish officers are yet to give asylum-related interviews next week.

All Turkish officers have the right to appeal their asylum rejection and even go to the European courts.

The Turkish government has made a formal request to the Greek Foreign Ministry for the officers’ extradition.

More than ten Turkish citizens have fled to Greece after the coup attempt and requested asylum. More information here
