Approximately 1,500 refugee children started lessons at 30 public schools across Greece on Monday despite being received with mixed reactions by the locals. While in some schools the they were warmly welcome, in some others parents staged protest actions and some even did not send their own kids to schools.
Protests – Elementary school in Volvi: from the 130 children, 25 did not attend classes on second day, 16 on the first day. Media do not exclude prosecutor’s intervention as it is illegal to not send children to school.
In some cases the negative reaction went to the extreme that the Parents Association in an elementary school on the island of Chios distributed “referendum” questionnaires to the students. Their parents should simply reply with YES or NO as to whether refugee children should enroll. The school teachers stopped the action. Point is that there are no plans to implement the Refugee Children School Scheme on Chios.
Refugee children attend classes from 2 pm to 6 pm, after the normal school operation is over. They receive school bags and text books. Children are being transported form reception centers to local schools per buses chartered by the International Organization for Migration. Members and volunteers from non-governmental organizations escort the children.
The School Scheme is implemented in Attica, Central Macedonia and Epirus in north-western Greece.
The program is scheduled to be gradually expanded to 22,000 refugee children and 800 schools nationwide.
Despite assurance by the Education Ministry and other institutions that refugee children have been vaccinated, some parents fall victim to right-extremist propaganda.
