Three cadets beaten, suffered fractures in downtown Athens

Three cadets of the Hellenic Army Academy, one army conscript and three civilians were attacked and injured by an unknown group of perpetrators in the metro and train station <Monastiraki> in downtown Athens on Sunday afternoon.

Two of the cadets are hospitalized with fractures. The victims include random passersby in the most touristic area in Athens.

Citing eye-witness media note that the attackers were some 30 people who mistakenly thought the cadets were “fascists” due to the short hair-cut.

The attackers were reportedly shouting at the cadets “you’re fascists” and beat them without mercy. The cadets were on Sunday leave and wearing civilian clothes. The sought refugee in a cafeteria

The attack took place short before an anti-fascist demonstration was launched at Syntagma Square. A far-right demonstration was also scheduled to take place later.

Earlier in the day tensions had broken out in the area following two rival demonstrations — one in support of the right to determine one’s gender identity and the other against it.

Police is seeking to identify the attackers.

It is not clear whether it was the same group of people wearing hoods who attacked also members of the religious-fanatics of “Sacred Band” also in Monastiraki on Sunday afternoon.

The fanatics had gone to the train station holding banners reading “Orthodoxy or Death” and “No to electronic ticket.”
