33 Turkish nationals asked for political asylum after landing on the island of Oinousses

33 Turkish nationals have reportedly asked for political asylum after their boat reached the small island of Oinousses, North-East of Chios in Aegean Sea on Thursday evening.

According to local media reports, there are academics, teachers, doctors and a family with four little children.

They all said they fled Turkey fearing for their lives in a regime of persecution and lack of freedom.

They said that they were from the broader area of Izmir.

One smuggler was also on board of the speed boat.

They were all transferred to the police department of Chios. They immediately applied for political asylum.

It is the first time that such a massive arrival of Turkish nationals seeking asylum is taking place.

It is estimated that around 1,000 Turkish nationals have sought asylum in Greece after the failed coup in July 2016.

However, it is the first time that such a massive arrival of Turkish asylum seekers  is taking place.

For sure, the incident will challenge the relations between Greece and Turkey, relations that are not in their best for the time being.
