Council of State freezes ESR decision and the end of private Mega TV

With an interim order express, the president of the Council of State,  Nikolaos Sakellariou, suspended the decision of the Greek Radio & Television Council (ESR) to stop the broadcasting of private television channel MEGA TV.  It was the ownership of Mega that had turned to the CoS.

MEGA argues that Law 4339/2015 is unconstitutional and contrary to the European legislation.

As a result, the chairman of the CoE with his interim order froze the decision of the ESR, until a decision is taken on the withdrawal request filed by the television station.

The CoS will discuss Mega’s appeal to cancel the ESR decision on May 4th 2018.

Once the biggest private television broadcaster in Greece, Mega was abandoned by its old and new owners, has been in limbo for the last two years, and several hundred workers without paid salaries.

The CoS decision relieved the  unpaid employees who hope that the broadcaster will manage to obtain a license for ‘thematic’ tv and continue its operation.
