Greece grants political asylum to 2nd Turkish serviceman

The Greek Asylum Committee has granted political asylum to the second Turkish serviceman, one of the 8 who fled to Greece on a helicopter, after the failed coup in summer 2016. The man is expected to be released from custody soon.

Last week, another Turkish serviceman, the co-pilot of the helicopter, who was granted asylum was released from custody and was taken into an undisclosed location under strict security measures.

Ankara has submitted three extradition requests, but Greece’s top courts have rejected them fearing that the Turkish soldiers will not have a fair trial in Turkey.
