Very High Risk of Fires warning for islands, Attica and other regions of Greece

Greece’s Civil Protection has issued a Very High Risk warning for wildfires for Sunday, August 12th 2018.  According to the statement, large parts of Greece are at Very High Risk (Level 4) and High Risk (Level 3) of fires.

At Very High Risk are the regions of Attica, Sterea, Peloponnese, islands in the Aegean Sea.

Very High Risk of Fire for:

Attica Prefecture

North Aegean: Lesvos, Chios

Sterea Prefecture:  Viotia, Evia, Skyros (Sporades)

Peloponnese: Corinth, Argolida

High Risk of Fire for:

The Dodecanese islands, South Ionian islands,  Aegean islands and Crete, Halkidiki, East Thrace, South Central Greece, parts of Peloponnese.

For regions marked with Yellow, there is High Risk for Fires (Level 3). Blue marks regions with Medium Risk and Green with Low Risk.

Civil Protection urges citizens to be very careful and avoid acts outdoors that can cause fire by negligence, such as throwing lit cigarettes, burning dry vegetation and small branches (twigs) and branches or cleaning residues, using sparking machines such as circular saws, welding devices, the use of outdoor grills etc.

The Civil Protection reminds that setting fields on fire is prohibited during the “anti-fire season” in the summer months.

In the event of a fire, citizens should immediately notify the Fire Service by calling number <199>
