First “Jobless Club” in Crete

What can you do in austerity and recession times? Organize yourself ! Unemployed youth of Heraklion in Crete established the first “Jobless Club” with the aim to promote their interests in the local labor market and authorities. One of the major objectives of the association is to meet members of the competent bodies of the city requiring a social policy for the unemployed.

Among the main demands of the club is free travel on public transport, free entrance to cinemas, concerts, museums and archaeological sites, and  discount rates of Electricity and Telephone.

Unemployment is currently at 14% with increasing tendency. Jobless allowance of 450 euro is given for one year. The Greek government is now considering to modify the criteria for ‘jobless allowance’ according to personal or even family assets.
