Unemployment in Greece hits record with 15,1% in Jan 2011

Unemployment in Greece reached with 15,1% a new historic record in January 2011 – in comparison: 11,3 % in January 2010, 14,8% in December 2010.  According to Greek Statistics Authority data released on Thursday, the total number of jobless reached 756.795 people. The total number of employed is 4.267.584 people. Within one year, 189.663 people lost their work, while from Dec 2010 to Jan 2011, 23.149 people lost their income.

The data refers to employees and does not include self-employed who closed down their enterprises.

After one year long unemployment allowance of 450 euros per month, jobless are left without any income. In times of IMF recession, most probably for the rest of their life….
