A sharp increase in free meals demand by Greeks has been recorded by the Church in recent months. Father Chrysostomos Symeonidis from the Charitable Service of Church of Greece told news portal Capital that since last September the number of Greeks seeking free meals distributed by the Church has been dramatically increased. “While last year the Greeks were 25%, their number has doubled, reaching 50%”. The rest are immigrants.
The Church of Greece distributes alone in Athens 10,000 portions of free meals daily, 365 days per year. Around Athens and through out the country 250,000 free meals are distributed on a daily basis.
No wonder that the number of Greeks seeking free meals has increased after the strict IMF-austerity measures drove to poverty thousands of low-pensioners and left without income hunders thousands of jobless.
