Athens Metro, urban train, tram on strike & work stoppage, Jan 23/2013

Despite courts declaring the strikes at Athens Metro as ‘illegal’, the union of the Metro workers decided to continue their protest and launch a new 24-hour strike on Wednesday, January 23rd 2013. On the same day workers at urban train ISAP/HSAP and the tram will stage a work stoppage form 12 noon until 4 p.m.

Blue buses and trolley will operate as usual.

The management of the three public transport means calls on workers to return to work and threatens them even with lay-offs in case they don’t comply.

  1. It remained unclear whether the government would resort to imposing martial law and force the striking employees back to work, with government sources telling Kathimerini, “We will use all legal means at our disposal.” However the union representing the metro workers said in a statement that its action was a matter of principle and an expression of solidarity with two colleagues who, it said, “suffered acute heart attacks following the threats of the transport minister.” http://www.ekathimerini.com/4dcgi/_w_articles_wsite1_1_21/01/2013_479593

First: it would be something completely new IF the government would us a legal ‘means’ instead of improvising, ducking and shortcutting things. Let’s see if they dare uphold the court ruling. But I won’t bet any money on them to do so.
Second: I can’t decide if I find that quote from the Union utter funny or totally and utter crazy.

    • ‘martial law’? HAAAAA! Freudian slip of kathimerini or the gov’t source? epitrateusi (conscription) of workers means rather ‘enforced mobilization’ so they go back to work”.
Unless they plan to dress them with army uniforms..
