Larissa: Teacher suffers heart attack and dies after being laid-off due to Troika austerity

The shock of being sent to labor reserve and lose the income overnight was probably something the heart of the female teacher could not bear. On Saturday afternoon, the teacher felt unease and fainted.  The doctors of the hospital where she was transferred could only confirm their death.

The teacher of Nursing was one of the 112 teachers at the technical and Vocational high school of Larissa who were recently put on ‘labor reserve’. The Troika impose measure provides that civil servants will be sent home with 75% of their salary for a period of maximum 9 months. After this period expires, they will be dismissed.

According to her colleagues, the teacher had undergone a bypass heart surgery one and a half year ago and she had submitted application to be exempted from the measure. The Education ministry had informed her per telephone that her request was rejected. The teacher had learned the bad news on Friday. Twenty four hours later, she was dead.

The teacher was an active member of the school committee for the teachers’ rights and was fighting against the lay-offs and the ‘labor reserve’.

PS What??? Are there people behind the numbers? One could never imagine…

As I heard from other cases that people have been laid-off via phone calls, I storngly advice the officials of any Greke ministry to watch the film “Up in the Air”.
