Greece’s only bear sanctuary Arcturos announced that it will refuse a donation of 5,000 euro offered by the right-extreme political party Golden Dawn. “Arcturos recognizes that it was a mistake to accept this donation and for this reason has decided to turn the gift down and is returning the money to the party in question,” the sanctuary said Wednesday in a statement.
An outcry broke out in Greece after Golden Dawn advertised the donation and said that its leader, Nikos Michaloliakos, was an animal lover.
Arcturos had recently made an appeal for donations to stave off closure.
The sanctuary in Nymfaio Mountain in Northern Greece was created 21 years ago to end the practice of dancing bears but has since expanded its activities to protect flora and other animals.
