An arson attack against the political office of Marine Minister, Militadis Varvitsiotis (Nea Dimocratia), took place short before 8 o’clock on Wednesday evening in Athens. According to Greek media, a group of people wearing masks threw flammable liquid on the ground floor of the building where Varvitsiotis’ office is located and set it alight.
Before starting the fire, the perpetrators reportedly took away two people working at the Ministers’ office and then set the fire. The arsonists fled.
The Fire brigades extinguished the fire.
Varvitsiotis political office is located in Kolonaki district in Athens. The police has launched investigation.
Miltiadis Varvitsiotis was in London when the arson attack took place. Speaking to private Skai TV, the minister said that the “attack was politically motivated” and that the government will continue to work towards the reforms. “The government is not to be terrorized,” he stressed adding that his office has no security.
The press office of Nea Dimocratia issued a statement condemning the attack. “Every attempt of terrorism will fail,” the statement concluded.
I expect that the further step is to say that leftist groups are responsible and therefore deserve criminalization. And the next one is attempting at forbidding left parties including Syriza whatever 20% they may represent. Or is this scenario too gross? Nothing is too gross I think.
