Athens Metro stuck in tunnel; passengers walk to next station using mobile-phones as flashlight

Passengers of Athens Metro Line 2 experienced the blankest horror when the wagons stopped in an underground tunnel due to mechanical failure. The light in the wagons went off, with the passengers first waiting patiently. When time passed and nothing happened, panic broke among the dozens of people commuting to work. The driver opened the doors and the passengers started to walk in the darkness to the next station using their mobile phones as flashlights.

According to eyewitnesses, the metro wagons stopped somewhere between Attiki and Sepolia stations, and that they were waiting inside the dark train for more than one hour. Some of them showed  symptoms of claustrophobia.

Passengers helped the driver to open several doors and walked between the rail tracks to the next station.

“Had it caught fire, we would have certainly burnt. And had the metro being immobilized not that close to the next station, we would certainly be still there, in the tunnel,” a passenger obviously still in panic told news website enikos.gr.

The incident occured at 9:30 am Wednesday, underground Athens 200 meter away from Attiki Station. The company sent another metro wagon to “push” the immobilized one but the experiment apparently did not work.

Speaking to Newsit.gr, chairman of Metro workers union STASY said that the metro wagons were recently delivered and there was no obvious reason for a mechanical failure.
