ND MP Psycharis’ resignation frees analysts’ imagination

Sudden and unexpected, Nea Dimokratia MP Andreas Psycharis submitted his resignation from the party of PM Samaras, right after he voted in the Greek Parliament in favor of the crucial bill granting debtors up to 100-installment payment scheme.

In a press release, Psycharis explained the reason for his resignation as “after consinderation of several months, I felt it was no longer worth serving a political system that cannot reach an understanding even on the self-evident.”

He added that after he entered politics in May 2012, he had realized that his hopes of discussing the country’s problems with other Greek politicians in a respectful and constructive manner had been a pipe dream. «I realize that I am just a romantic,» he said.

Psycharis stressed that he resigned not only from ND but also from politics, that he would not keep  his parliament seat as “independent MP” but return it to Nea Dimokratia.

“Romantic” or pure political?

Former diplomat Andreas Psycharis, 47, is the son of media mogul Stavros Psycharis owner of DOL Holding that publishes several mainstream dailies and weeklies (Ta NEA, To VIMA) and shareholder in private MEGA TV. His godfather was PASOK founder Andreas Papandreou. His father is being considered to be one of the most powerful personalities in Greece, who could bring up and down governments, prime ministers and politicians.

Reason enough for the “usual mean Greeks” to wonder, how comes Andreas Psycharis had a “romantic” approach to politics and others to analyze his resignation as “a sign for upcoming snap polls and political U-turn of his father’s media in support of left-wing SYRIZA and Alexis Tsipras” that constantly lead in public opinion polls.

Psycharis’ colleagues give also a political approach to his resignation, estimating that with the current public opinion rates, he would not be reelected as ND is expected to lose several seats in Parliament.
