Commemorating ancient Greek battles …with red carpet down to the beach

With red carpet to the beach? Yes. With red carpet to the beach. Sorry,  but this is one of the most kitsch enstantane I have seen in my life. Defense Minister Panos Kammenos was set to commemorate the anniversary of the Battle of Salamina that took place in September 480 BC. Nothing to comment or criticize on this or the visit of the Minister to the island of Salamina.

Apart from the long red carpet spread over several wooden pallets orderly put next to each other on a earthy and uneven path full of pebbles, rocks and soil.  The red carpet ended just a couple of centimeters before the sea shore apparently for practical and technical reasons like the risk of being soaked in salty water.

Kammenos kitsch
Minister Kammenos walked down to the beach and bowed with respect to honor the soldiers who fought in the Alliance of Greek city-states against the Persian Empire in the Battle of Salamis.

No idea, what the flags of USA, UK or Cuba are doing in the battle of Salamis. Honestly.

*sigh*

PS I never understood why presidents, prime ministers, ministers and other dignitaries need to walk on a red carpet.
