Fire brigades operating from land and by air are trying to extinguish the fire as the area is densely populated and the wooden houses stand next to each other.

The fire broke out in the old city of the island’s capital near the public library.

The Bishop of Lefkada ordered the preventive evacuation of the old church Panagia ton Xenon (Virgin Mary of the Strangers).

Local media report that members of the parish have started to remove icons and other religious objects from the 18th century church.

35 firefighters with 15 vehicles, a hiker unit and one helicopter deployed from a neighboring municipality are operating right now.
According to latest information the fire seems to have been taking slightly under control. However, state broadcaster ERT reported that a total of six wooden houses have been burned.
It looks as if there are no injuries or other human casualties and that nobody was trapped in any of the houses that got ablaze.
UPDATE: six wooden houses and one move theater damaged by the fire.
