Two people riding a motorcycle threw a grenade at the French embassy in Athens at 4:45 am Thursday morning. The grenade exploded injuring one policeman who was on duty.

According to police, one of the people threw the grenade while the motorcycle was passing by the embassy located in Vassilissis Sofias Avenue and thus opposite the Greek Parliament.
The policeman was taken to a military hospital with blast injuries in his right foot. He underwent surgery, his conditions is not considered to be serious.
The police immediately sealed off the area around the embassy which is also near the Greek Foreign Ministry and the embassy of Belgium.

A couple of hours later, an abandoned motorcycle was found near Exarchia district and Omonoia Square, some 500 meters away. The motorcycle was taken to police laboratories.

The area around the embassy is very well guarded and with many surveillance cameras.
A reporter of private Skai TV said that the motorcycle was “hiding” behind a public bus in order to prevent being seeing by police outside the parliament.
The attack occurs just five days before the visit of outgoing US president Barack Obama in Athens.
So far no organization claimed responsibility.
Later in the morning, an anonymous phone caller warned of a bomb in the Finance Ministry nearby. the building was evacuated, police investigation proved it was a farce.
