Black Friday: Crowds of Greeks defy the crisis & rush to stores for the best deal (picts, videos)

Unprecedented masses of people lined up outside big retail stores long before the shops open on Friday. The first customers arrived as early as 5:45 a.m. in order to be the first to “raid” the shop when the doors open.

Of course, the images are unprecedented as it is the first time the Black Friday shopping is implemented in Greece.

Many school students reportedly skipped the first hours of classes to go shopping.

With stores mostly using the social media to promote their Black Friday special offers of even more than 50% price reductions, no wonder that the debt-ridden Greeks left their homes and moved around for a make over – or a make up.

I believe, we haven not seen so many people in shopping frenzy neither during   winter or summer sales neither during the sales in-between. We might have seen these crowds on the streets on the first days of winter and summer sales a couple of decades ago. But never before during the last 7 years of the economic crisis.

And there are many clients who chose to make their purchases from the comfort of their home or office via the internet. A big chain selling electronics reported of a record of 4,100 online orders by 2 p.m. and 5,000 orders per telephone within four hours. The purchase increase was some 550% by early Friday afternoon.

Many shops will continue with Black Friday offers also on Saturday and Monday.

Some shops with online departments prepare a Cyber Monday with special offers on November 28th 2016. A surfing through the internet showed that the Cyber Monday is going to runs Monday and Tuesday, with many online stores to offer transport and payment options free of charge.

Of course, we would not be typical Greeks if we wouldn’t complain. The Retail Association said that Black Friday should be renamed Blood Friday due to the economic difficulties retailers experience due to lack of customers, over taxation, high social security contributions etc etc etc.

The Association of Retail Workers criticized that Black Friday is another tool in the context of destroying laborers’ rights etc etc

Even the (ruling) left-wing party SYRIZA expressed its disapproval of the Black Friday saying “it’s an American habit” etc etc etc.

PS From what I see and hear, me thinks, Black Friday has been a success in Greece and we should have it once a month at least 🙂

    Still, I am happy!

    • to tell you the truth, I saw a pair of boots in Ermou with a ‘huge discount’: down to 85 euro from 89 original price lol
