Head of Eurogroup Jeroen Dijsselbloem expressed the view that Greece is moving in the “right direction”. However he also expressed concern about the political stability in the debt-ridden country.
Speaking to Belgian newspaper L ‘Echo (weekend edition) about Europe in general and Greece in particular, Dijsselbloem said that
the country is moving in the right direction as there is growth in many consecutive quarters. it has completed large part of the budget and confidence is being restored among other Member States.
However, the big question is how long the political stability in the country will last.
Replying to a question about the debt, Dijsselbloem noted the debt consists of the amount, the interest to be paid and the repayment period, and that in the case of Greece, it has been agreed that the total loan amount has to be repaid, yet, on the other hand the interest has been lowered and the repayment period has been extended.
He did not rule out that more should be done if necessary.
He admitted thought that when a lot of the available money is used to pay off debts, this could have a negative impact on the economy. He claimed, however, that with long periods of repayment and low interest rates, the cost remains relatively small.
“More Europe is not the answer to our problems.” Dijsselbloem concluded speaking about the future of Euro.
PS no matter what Greece does, its European partners will always find a reason to grouch. Compliance with the bailout agreement and economy are doing well but … the political stability? How about it?
