It started with a loud noise. The first thunder occurred somewhere in the north back of my home. The second thunder followed within a couple of minutes. Heavy rain and hail fell in the center of Athens and surrounding suburbs on Sunday that started with sunshine and temperature over 30 degrees Celsius.
The summer rain storm lasted less than half an hour.
But it was heavy enough to flood main roads, as the authorities do not manage to fix problems in infrastructure. One of the city’s main avenues, Piraeos Street, was closed to traffic for two hours, because it was flooded.

The Fire Brigades received 30 calls to pump water.

Meteorologists had warned of the storm on Sunday noon.
Fire Brigades said they have so far received 50 calls to pump water.
Possibility is high that there will be another storm later in the evening.
The good thing about these kind of summer storms in Athens is that the sky is clearing very quick. We enjoy a bright sunshine right now.
