A group of ten assailants threw molotov cocktail bombs at a police station in Pefki suburb of North Athens short after 2 a.m. on Thursday. The attackers were wearing hoods and helmets.
At the time of the attack there were four police officers, including two guards and five to six people in detention, Greek media report.
The attackers hurled five molotov cocktail bombs at the police station and at vehicles parked outside. Two police cars and one private vehicle caught fire, one of the vehicles was totally damaged.
The firebombs were hurled at the guard outpost and the garage.
Police told media that the fire bombs contained also oil that makes it easier for the fire to spread.
Nobody was injured, the attackers fled.
According to some media, two of the police officers fired in the air in order to hinder the attackers from coming closer.
“The attackers had the intention to kill,” the chairman of the Special Guards Union, Stratos Mavroeidakos told media.
“My colleague was rescued because he found shelter in the shielded outpost. They were in a mood to kill. They threw firebombs at the guard and in the garage so that the whole building would be engulfed in flames,” he said.
He added that “attacks at police stations have become a daily routine,” and expressed the fear “we could have a dead colleague and a dead citizen.”
The attack has been recorded by security cameras.
