Tornado sweeps through Maleme beach on Crete (video)

A tornado swept through Maleme Beach in Platanias in the prefecture of Chania on the island of Crete causing damages to local businesses.

Local media speak of an unprecedented phenomenon as an impressive waterspout was first formed in the sea, an unusual phenomenon in the area. “Typically a waterspout weaken when it reaches the shore,” plataniasnews.gr notes adding that one did not weaken but swept as a tornado the area.

In an exclusive video of plataniasnews.gr, the whirl wind brings down a restaurant pergola “as if it was made of paper”, throws down the stands of a neighboring touristic shop,  drifts away people as if they were dolls, moves garbage bins to the back yard of the business, and damages cars parked there.

The material damage is estimated at 60,000 euros.
