A 4-year-old child died and 27 people were injured when a van transferring migrants collided with a truck on the old national highway Thessaloniki-Kavala on Friday night.
Among the injured are five children with the youngest to be a 5-month-old baby.
Injured are also two traffickers who are hospitalized guarded. The driver and trafficker was sightly injured and has been arrested.
The traffic accident reportedly followed a chase of the migrants van by a police car. Increasing speed to escape police, the driver reportedly passed on the opposite lane where the van collided with a truck.
Fire brigades and police cars rushed to the accident scene to pull the injured out of the van.
Twelve ambulances transferred the injured to nearby hospitals. Two of the injured are in serious condition.
The first to be transferred to the hospital was the 4-year-old boy that had suffered head injuries.
The truck driver was unharmed.
It is suspected that the traffickers were transferring the migrants and refugees from Evros crossing to Turkey to Thessaloniki.
The accident occurred short before 9 o’ clock Friday night at the junction of Vrasna.
Traffic accidents with cars transferring migrants and refugees have increased lately in Northern Greece as illegal migration via the Evros river is surging.
