US State Department describes Turkey’s drilling as “highly provocative”

The US State Department issued a sharp statement with regards to Turkey’s drilling in the Exclusive Economic Zone of Cyprus. It described the planned drilling as “highly provocative.”

The statement of the US State Department reads:

“The United States is deeply concerned by Turkey’s announced intentions to begin offshore drilling operations in an area claimed by the Republic of Cyprus as its Exclusive Economic Zone. This step is highly provocative and risks raising tensions in the region. We urge Turkish authorities to halt these operations and encourage all parties to act with restraint.”

it is the first time the US issues such a sharp wording statement towards Turkey.

Over the weekend, also the European Union expressed “grave concern” about the drilling.

Meanwhile, Cyprus has warned of international arrest warrants those assisting Turkey’s drilling. The warrants refer to the crew of the ships Barbaros and Fatih, with the majority of them to be reportedly Norwegians.
