Military equipment has been stolen from the Naval Technical Facility on the island of Leros in the eastern Aegean sea. The theft has been discovered during a search in the facility’s inventory. The incident is considered as “serious”, teams from the counter-terror department of police to investigate the issue.
A statement issued by the Navy General Staff on Monday evening on the issue did not specify the kind of the stolen military equipment neither the extent of the theft.
However, on Tuesday noon, media report that it was anti-tank equipment and explosives.
According to preliminary investigation, indications show no intervention from someone outside the military facility. Suspicion is close that the theft was conducted by someone who had legal access to the warehouse.
The investigation has been assigned to counter-terror department and a preliminary investigation has been ordered to investigate the circumstances under which military material was removed or lost.
A new inventory has been ordered.
The personnel of the naval facility has been questioned, while investigators are to seek those who have had access to the warehouse during the last two years.
