Famous Greek fashion designer Sophia Kokosalaki passed away at the age of 47. The designer of “new Grecian style” was living in London.
Kokosalaki was born and raised in Greece, where she studied English literature.
She then moved to UK where she studied fashion design at University of Arts Central Saint Martins in London.
She started her eponymous label in London in 1999.
She received the Elle Designer award and Art Foundation Award for Fashion in 2002 and New Generation Designer award in 2004.
She was receiving regular editorial from Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and W magazines.
In 2004 she was commissioned to design outfits for the opening and closing ceremonies at the 2004 Summer Olympic Games, which were staged in her home town of Athens.
Over six thousand people were dressed by Kokosalaki for the opening ceremony.
Singer Björk who performed “Oceania” wore an enormous ocean-inspired dress designed by Kokosalaki.
Her trademark style often featured classic Grecian draping combined with hand-crafted elements.
While Kokosalaki was particularly known for draped, softly flowing dresses, her designs were also be architectural and heavily textured, and she worked in leather and tougher fabrics as well.
Her death caused deep sorrow to her family and her many friends around the world.

The cause of her death has not been officially known.
According to local media, Sophia Kokosalaki has been fighting cancer for the last two months.

I graduated with Sophia, MA Fashion Design, Central Saint Martins, there was 16 of us in total.. I remember her Gracious style and personality.. we use to be good friends and spend time discussing the future of fashion..
