New Democracy has set two important criteria that will determine whether Greeks living abroad are eligible for voting. The Greek government is determined to have the relevant law pass through the Parliament with a wide consent, preferably with more than the required 200 votes in the 300-seat Parliament.
Interior Minister has sent the government’s proposals to all six opposition parties.
Crucial criteria
- The voter’s economic links with Greece like registration to the Greek tax office and tax return
- 30 years of maximum absence from Greece
Precondition is also the registration in special electorate catalogues for Greeks living abroad.
It seems that ND is abandoning the plan for postal vote.
According to information of documento.gr, necessary is the voter’s “personal presence during the election process in embassies, consulates and other buildings, where there are large numbers of Greeks and the distances impose more polling stations.”
The criteria are thought as the basis of discussion among the relevant inter-party committee in the Palriament, scheduled to meet next week.
Party representatives will express their positions on specific criteria, raise objections or additional terms in an effort to formulate the law with the highest possible consent.
New Democracy wanted to pass the law by the end of the month.
