Mayors of 5 Aegean islands jointly reject “pre-departure migrants centers”

In a joint statement, the five mayors of the eastern Aegean islands affected by the refugee / migrant issue reject the governmental plans for closed pre-departure centers with capacities exceeding 5,000 people.

The mayors complain that they were not informed in advance about the new facilities and urge New Democracy to stick to its pre-election commitments to decongest the islands.

Mayor of East Samos, George Stantzos, of Kos, Theodosis Nikitaras, of Leros, Michael Kolias, of Levos Stratis Kytelis and of Chios, Stamatios Karmantzis state in their joint statement among others:

“We do not accept the government’s recent announcements about the pre-departure centers.

We demand that her pre-election commitments be respected.

The government should respect the decisions of our City Councils immediately and massively decongest the islands and proceed to safeguarding the maritime borders.”

They ask for the support of all their colleagues, all over the country, “in the difficult times our islands are going through.” They add “united and all together, we will address this important issue of security and prosperity.”

Note that all mayors have been elected with New Democracy ticket.
