Greece Weather Red Alert: Gale-force wind up 10B, rainstorms, snow

A new cold weather front will bring rainstorms, heavy snow, hail and gale-force winds up to 9-10 Beaufort, Greece’s National Meteorological service (EMY) warns. The barometric low meteorologists have named “Eteoklis” (Eteocles) is expected to affect Greece as of Friday night, December 13, 2019.

“Eteoklis” will be of short duration but with very intense phenomena.

EMY’s Weather warning was initially in Orange Level and was turned Red on Friday evening.

The cold weather front is coming from UK, crosses the Alps and the Adriatic Sea before it hits Greece.

The very intense weather phenomena are forecast to last until the early morning hours of Sunday, Dec 15. They will then move towards the South-East and the East Mediterranean Sea.

Weather Forecast and Regions Affected

Friday, Dec 13

In late evening hours, Eteoklis will strike with heavy rainfalls and storms the islands of the Ionian Sea, Epirus, West Sterea, West and South Peloponnese, and the island of Crete during the night.

Saturday, Dec 14

Regions as mentioned above (Friday) and from the ealry morning hours: East Peloponnese and possibly temporarily also West Macedonia.

Morning: East Sterea and the Cyclades

As of noon: Evia, the Sporades islands, Thessaly, islands of the North Aegean Sea, Central and East Macedonia and Thrace.

As of afternoon: islands of the East Aegean and the Dodecanese.

The intense phenomena will weaken in the West as of the noon time, later East mainland, Cyclades, Crete and as of the night gradually also East Aegean islands and Dodecanese.

Winds: Stormy to gale-force up to 10 Beaufort

South-South-West winds in Greece’s West up to 8 Beaufort on Friday evening in the Ionian Sea,; later up to 9B and temporarily up to 10 B. As of the early morning hours of Saturday locally up to 9 B in the Ionian.

South winds up to 8 B and locally up to 9 B in the Aegean Sea on Saturday. They will gradually weaken as of early evening.

Snowfalls

Heavy snow is forecast in the mountainous and semi-mountainous areas of West Macedonia and Epirus on Saturday.

Who is Eteocles,whose name was given to the storm?

In Greek mythology, Eteocles was a king of Thebes, the son of famous Oedipus who killed his father Laius and married his mother without knowing his relationship to either. When the relationship was revealed, he was expelled from Thebes. The rule passed to his sons Eteocles and Polynices. However, because of a curse from their father, the two brothers did not share the rule peacefully and died as a result, ultimately killing each other in battle for control of the city.
