The Greek Navy will deploy a frigate to escort French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle on a part of its mission in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea.
President Emmanuel Macron said last week that the Charles de Gaulle will be escorted by forces from Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain and Greece.
The Charles de Gaulle and the carrier group, including the Greek frigate Spetsai, will begin their eastbound journey next week.
The ultimate destination of the French aircraft carrier is the Suez Canal.
On its way, it will hold exercises in late January with units of the Hellenic Navy in the wider area off Crete.
Afterward, it will continue to the Red Sea, where it will complete its mission as part of French efforts against Islamic State militants.
The Charles de Gaulle may reportedly embark on a new collaboration with the Hellenic Navy in the Eastern Mediterranean on its return from the Red Sea.
The carrier’s mission in the region will end in April, when it will begin a new one in the North Sea.
