Greeks celebrate Clean Monday with Lent delicacies and a huge Lagana

A bakery in Patras baked a super Lagana, the unleavened flatbread Greeks traditionally eat on Clean Monday. The proud piece of bread made of flour and water weights 60 kilos and is 4 meters high. Baker Pavlos said that the huge Lagana is a remedy against the …coronavirus.

Greeks celebrate the beginning of the 40-day Lent with anything but frugal meals. Dishes loaded with protein coming from the sea lay next to mountains of fresh green salads, olives, the famous taramosalata dip, stuffed wine leaves, and whatever comes to one’s mind except meat and dairy products.

Shrimps, Octapus, kalamari, muscles and raw sea food are the shining stars of the day.

Read our KTG post The Clea Monday Table with traditional recipes for the day.

Another Greek tradition of the Clean Monday is to fly a kite.
